Home brewers craft do-it-yourself beer

Published on hamiltonspace.com, August 13.

For many people, the phrase ‘home brewing’ conjures up images of moonshiners concocting putrid mixtures in their bathtubs. It is an association Joe Bair, owner of Princeton Homebrew, hopes to dispel.

Bair and his shop, located at 208 Sanhican Drive in Trenton, which has any equipment needed for home brewing, have started many local brewers on the way to their first batch of beer. Bair is perhaps the area’s most important advocate for the hobby, having founded a club for home brewers in 1995 called Princeton And Local Environs Pale Ale and Lager Enjoyment Society, or PALE ALES.

Condemned house may halt day care construction

leave a comment »

Published on hamiltonspace.com, August 5.

Hamilton may act to stop the construction of a day care center, if an engineer determines that it caused damage that led to the condemnation of a house on Evergreen Avenue.

Carmen and Madge Alessi lived in the house at 240 Evergreen Ave. until it was condemned as structurally unsound by the township after the wall of their basement buckled inward on Aug. 2. Madge Alessi said an engineer for her insurance company told her that constant vibration caused by the nearby construction of a Learning Experience day care center likely caused the damage, though the engineer won’t file an official report until Friday Aug. 7.

Published in the Press of Atlantic City, May 8

TRENTON – State Sen. Steven Oroho, R-Sussex, Morris, Hunterdon, thought he had written a simple bill that would help make the roads safer for bicyclists. Drivers would have to keep their vehicles at least three feet away from bikers or face a $100 penalty.

But on Thursday, the Senate Transportation Committee tabled the bill when things were not as simple as they looked.

Published in the Press of Atlantic City, May 5

TRENTON – The state Senate Judiciary Committee voted to renew the terms of 10 Superior Court judges, including three from Cumberland County.

Richard Geiger, of Millville; Harold Johnson Jr., of Bridgeton; and Julio Mendez, of Vineland, each has served his seven-year term. Each judge spent at least part of his term in family court. Geiger, who presides over drug courts in Cumberland, Salem and Gloucester counties, reported drug court was expanding. Cumberland County’s drug court has 208 participants. “It’s a remarkable turnaround for many of the participants,” he said.

The committee voted unanimously for the four local judges. The state Senate must now approve them.

TRENTON – Because of proposed state budget cuts, Katherine Grant-Davis, president of the New Jersey Primary Care Association, said community health centers might have to turn uninsured patients away or put them on waiting lists, something New Jersey centers have never done.

“Send us your tired, send us your poor, but send us your money,” she said at a Statehouse rally made up of health center workers, patients and supporters.

As you, my legion of readers, might have noticed, a number of the links on the site have been broken. This is due to the Atlantic City Press updating their Web site. I grabbed a couple of my best articles off the archives while I was at work yesterday, and I deleted the rest. From this point forward all of the articles will be in PDF format, and they’ll be hosted here, so nothing like this happens again. Thanks for reading!
